A senior member of Armenia’s governing Republican Party (RPA) has defended the current policy of President Serzh Sargsyan on normalizing ties with Turkey and said that it is up to the state institutions of Armenia to make decisions on relations between Yerevan and Ankara.
Edward Sharmazanov’s comments came on Wednesday as President Sargsyan was completing his weeklong tour of major Armenian communities abroad, with his stops including Paris, New York, Los Angeles, Beirut and Rostov-on-Don in southern Russia. At most destinations Sargsyan was met with protests staged by local Armenian groups protesting the planned signing of a deal with Turkey.
